C/C++ support for Visual Studio Code is provided by a Microsoft C/C++ extension to enable cross-platform C and C++ development on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Getting started

C/C++ compiler and debugger

The C/C++ extension does not include a C++ compiler or debugger. You will need to install these tools or use those already installed on your computer.

Popular C++ compilers are:

  • GCC on Linux
  • GCC via Mingw-w64 on Windows
  • Microsoft C++ compiler on Windows
  • Clang for XCode on macOS

Make sure your compiler executable is in your platform path so the extension can find it. You can check availability of your C++ tools by opening the Integrated Terminal (⌃` (Windows, Linux Ctrl+`)) in VS Code and try running the executable (for example g++ --help).

Install the Microsoft C/C++ extension

  1. Open VS Code.
  2. Click the Extensions view icon on the Sidebar (⇧⌘X (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+X)).
  3. Search for c++.
  4. Click Install.

Remote Development

VS Code and the C++ extension support Remote Development allowing you to work over SSH on a remote machine or VM, inside a Docker container, or in the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

If you haven't installed Visual Studio yet, now is the time. For download links and a quick walkthrough, see Install C++ support in Visual Studio. For more information about how to install Visual Studio in general, and troubleshooting tips if something goes wrong, see Install Visual Studio. Be sure to choose the Desktop development with C++ workload to include the C++ compilers, tools, and libraries when you install Visual Studio, because they are not installed by default.

These walkthroughs assume that you have installed Visual Studio and the C++ components required for Windows Desktop development. We also assume you understand the fundamentals of the C++ language. If you need to learn C++, there are many books and web resources available. One good place to start is the Get Started page of the Standard C++ Foundation website.

If you haven't installed Visual Studio yet, now is the time. In general, we highly recommend that you use Visual Studio 2019 even if you need to compile your code using the Visual Studio 2017 or Visual Studio 2015 compiler. For more information, see Use native multi-targeting in Visual Studio to build old projects.

Sep 20, 2015  The Bad. Of course, the main association auto tune has with music is producing awfully off-key songs as well as hurting the music industry as a whole. Because of the popularity of auto-tune, many feel the emphasis on how good a singer is has been cast aside for how technologically gifted they are. Is auto tune good or bad. Auto-Tune sounds terrible, But good music will still remain if either the trend dies off, Or people actually start using Auto-Tune correctly. Auto-Tune, When used correctly, Can fit the mood of a song, Like how Daft Punk uses robotic effects to go along with the theme of their music. May 26, 2015  Auto-Tune appeals to high-minded artists too: American indie favorite Bon Iver have released a track, Woods, which is widely regarded as an example of tasteful use of the technology. Getty Images. Mar 19, 2015  Auto-Tune is defined as something that isn’t “real” because it’s created using a computer. So, using that logic, music created pre-computer-era can be defined as real music – roots artists like Woody Guthrie, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters – not the bands of today.
